Can You Still Have Fun Even though You’re a Caregiver Now?
Now that you’re a family caregiver, there are probably some activities that you’ve had to change or stop. Many of those might have been leisure activities that gave you a lot of joy. But you don’t have to give up having fun altogether just because you’re a caregiver. Incorporating fun back into your life is powerful.
Schedule in Time for Fun
For most people, the idea of scheduling in fun is the exact opposite of fun. The thing is, as a caregiver, you do have responsibilities that you have to meet. Having a schedule that allows you to still have fun enables you to experience structured spontaneity. It doesn’t have to all be about dropping everything because there are lots of ways to have fun.
Make Sure You Do Something You Love Every Day
If you’re including time for fun in your schedule, then you can do something that you love to do every day. There are lots of ways you can do this and lots of different activities that you can include. Remember that your loved one enjoys having fun, too, so consider including her in some of the things that you love to do. You might be surprised what she can suggest, too.
Find Ways to Laugh
When you’re finding yourself experiencing a lack of fun, reintroduce laughter first. Laughing is a wonderful way to experience all of the joy and happiness in life. Watch funny movies or television shows or talk with your loved one and friends about stories that always make you laugh.
Fun Is Part of Life
Remember that fun is an essential part of life. If you’re stifling your urges to enjoy life because you think that you shouldn’t be having fun anymore, then you’re doing yourself and your loved one a disservice. Fun is definitely something that you should be incorporating into your everyday life. It makes you a well-rounded caregiver and it supports your own emotional health.
Just because you’re caring for your elderly loved one, that doesn’t mean that all of your fun times are over. Your definition of fun might change, but you should never stop having fun.
