As a family caregiver, there are certain tasks that can be unpleasant. One of them is helping with bathing. Your dad can’t wash himself anymore, so you need to do it. Your dad is embarrassed and resists. You’re not comfortable either, but you know it has to be done. Here are four approaches that can help.
Practice Modesty
Have your dad wear a loose fitting bathrobe or cover up with a few towels. He doesn’t have to be stripped down in order to bathe. Wash one area at a time and keep the other areas covered with towels or a robe.
A hand-held shower wand will make this easier. After sudsing up that area with a washcloth and shower gel or soap, rinse him off with the shower wand. When it comes to the genitals, keep your dad covered as much as possible. If the towel or robe gets wet it can get washed when you’re done. He’ll be more comfortable not being fully exposed, and chances are you’ll also feel a little more comfortable.
Purchase a Walk-in Shower/Tub
They’re expensive, but a walk-in tub can be very helpful for safe, less embarrassing bathing. Set your dad on the seat with a towel covering him, close the door, fill the tub with warm water, and turn on the jets. The movement of the water will keep you from seeing anything.
Some of these tubs also have hand-held shower wands. This makes washing hair easier. When he’s clean, you can activate the drain, have a towel ready to cover him, and help him dry off and get dressed.
Don’t Push It
If your dad is particularly resistant, don’t push it. Let him settle down and try again later. If you try to force the issue, it will lead to stress and possibly anger. It’s better to wait until your dad is in a better mood.
Hire a Caregiver
Pay a professional caregiver to handle baths for you. Your dad may not love it, but he may be happier, He has someone who is trained in senior care instead of his child.
A hired caregiver can help you with the more awkward tasks like bathing and grooming. While your dad gets the bath or shower he needs, you can complete other aspects of his care. Go cook his breakfast or make his bed. When he’s ready, you’ll be able to spend quality time together. Call our agency to learn more about caregivers.
